The Book of Jonah

Whether you are familiar with the Bible or not, the story of a man being swallowed by a fish is pretty memorable, but there is more depth to this story than you might think.

Jonah was a prophet to the people of the northern kingdom of Israel under the reign of Jeroboam II. God commanded Jonah to go to Nineveh and deliver a message of repentance and mercy. But Jonah refused to go. The rest of the story unfolds in the aftermath of Jonah's stubborn refusal to obey God. It is a story of Jonah's resistance to learn truth of God’s astonishing, relentless, sovereign grace.

This book is a huge challenge to all of us to care for the salvation of the world, to care for those who are not like ourselves, and to care for the lost wherever we may find them. It shows us the Gospel is bigger than we might think.

The story of Jonah is not just history for the sake of history. This story is about God, His mission, His mercy, and His love for His people. The better we know our missional God, the more missional we will become. Let's look together as we begin the study of Jonah.
